For sex, see librarian: condoms-check 'em out!
ResumCertainly condoms may offend some people, just as many particular books offend some people. But condom machines in the library do not require people to buy condoms or approve of them any more than stocking books on masturbation and safer sex requires people to borrow them, or displaying fliers about these same topics requires people to take some and read them. Condom machines are key ingredients in AIDS education and prevention, providing not only convenient access and confidentiality but focus for awareness and discussion as well. Now, back to Will Manley. He was not psychic, as it turns out, merely ahead of his time as a veteran of a similar conflict instigated by a local Planned Parenthood about 15 years ago. That, he told the author, was the source of the questionnaire item. And it seems that 22% of his 2,797 respondents felt that libraries should have condom dispensers in their restrooms. This translates into more than 600 people, probably 600 libraries, not an insignificant number.
