Personal Profiles: The men who participated in the research ranged in age from under seventeen years to forty-five years, with the majority in the eighteen to twenty-five year age category./ While most had attended second level education, this was usually only until the age of 14-16 years./ Most respondants were unemployed at the time of interview./ The majority of those interviewed had experienced homelessness at some point in their lives, while over a third were homeless at the time of the research./ Most men identified themselves as gay, with a quarter stating that they were bisexual and five heterosexual./ Half of the men stated that they had a partner at the time of the research. In most cases this was a male. Personal Experiences: The age of first paid sexual contact varied greatly from between thirteen to twenty years of age./ Locations for meeting clients included parks, clubs, toilets, bars, and saunas./ Customers were mostly viewed as being middle class, ranging in age from thirty to sixty years./ Over 40% of respondants had been forced to have sex or engage in particular sex acts. Health Issues: Services provided were standard throughout those interviewed, including hand relief, oral and anal sex./ Degree of condom use varied substantially. Almost half the respondants stated that they had been offered money for unsafe sex./ Over a quarter of respondants felt they were not at risk of getting HIV./ A similar proportion had never had a blood test for the virus./ Of the seventeen men who had tested for HIV, only seven had received counselling beforehand./Only 30% of respondents had been screened for STD's./ Drug taking was common among the majority of the men interviewed while over a third inject or have injected drugs. Service providers: At present there is no specifically designated service for men working ¡n prostitution.Almost none of the agencies could estímate the numbers of men working in prostitution ¡n their área. Most of the agencies felt they may have contact with the clients of men working ¡n prostitution. It was felt that it is very important that men working in prostitution be consulted regarding the type service provisión needed./ More training was favoured by all respondants./ The research was welcomed in that ¡t will help to raise awareness of the issue of men in prostitution in Ireland and provide some insight into their particular needs.
